a porcelain gadget for a fictive social network
We believe to be leading our everyday lives on our own, within the open field of possibilities, and by freedom of choice. However there are algorithms and databases which preemptively manage decisions and control our lifes. We are witnessing a world of ever-present technology, in which self-optimising algorithms have long learned to interpret our emotions and can anticipate and foresee our future moves. Social interactions have been regulated and customized resulting in a society in which controversial discussions have become pure luxury. The fictive social network „Bristlers” is an answer to this Scenario. With its real-life smartphone app extension it enables its users to meet others who might be interesting and controversial partners for a discussion. The Gadget is a small hairy object with a porcelain shell. The moment a user of Bristlers happens to be close to a potentially interesting opponent, the object will bristle its hair giving its surrounding a hint as well as triggering a real life interaction.

Tiniest Particles
A solid and inanimate body shows abnormal features on parts of its surface. It appears to be infiltrated by living matter comprising of pores that investigate their surroundings. From inside the wooden corpus a strong light is flowing outward. The eyes-like irises on the objects surface are interactively opening and closing. The sculptures shape is inspired by the geometric form of magnetites found inside the marsian meteorite ALH84001. Researches suggest that only contact with bacteria could have shaped the magnetites form.
Part of the Exhibition at the KiKK Festival Belgium, 2013. The iris technology derives from the installation Aperture by TheGreenEyl, 2012 at Stereolux Nantes.

a kinetic porcelain sculpture
Porcelosía is an interior architectural element composed by semi-translucent porcelain modules supported by a metal framework and subtly put in motion by a fine mechanism. Porcelosía works as a porous membrane, a filter of light and privacy. Its visual lightness and the game of light and shadow generated by its wave-like movements evokes the pleasant light of sun flickering through tree leaves. The porcelain screen induces a feeling of protection and, at the same time, the material’s delicacy portrays the fragility of privateness itself. It also works as a center piece - a contemplation vortex that influences a space’s character and adds aesthetic value to the ambience.

Die innere Form
about the bonds between owner and object
Auf verschiedenen Wegen der Recherche haben wir uns eine Vorstellung erarbeitet, wie persönliche Beziehungen zu Gegenständen entstehen können. Dabei ist uns wichtig, festzustellen, dass es sich um ein Potential handelt, um Geschichten und Gefühle, die durch den Gestalter nicht steuerbar sind oder sein sollten. Sie entstehen meist erst nach einer gewissen Zeit und durch Umstände und Geschichten, mit denen sie im Laufe ihres Produktlebens in Verbindung gebracht werden. Doch es liegt in der Macht des Gestalters, diese persönliche Beziehung anzustoßen oder bewusst zu begünstigen. Die Aspekte, die uns in der Recherchephase an liebenswerten und geliebten Dingen auffielen, haben wir im gesammelt. Dabei treten immer mehrere der Begrifflichkeiten zusammen auf und gruppieren sich um einen ausschlaggebenden Gedanken mit dem man das Produkt verbindet. Im Zuge des Projekts sind vier Produkte entstanden. Diese, sowohl als auch unser Konzeptansatz ist in ausführlicher Form hier zu finden:

a modern wooden prothesis
The Individuality of a prothesis and the personal relation of the user to it is in direct connection to its materiality and its look and feel. These features contribute to the identification of the user with the prothesis and to the motivation of the patient. For many years prosthetic legs were made mainly from wooden materials. Technical advancements have led to the usage of carbon fibre, plastics, aluminium and materials alike. All of those materials have desirable properties but at the same time feel artificial and cold. Combining wood and a modern process of laminating one can however create a material which feels warm on skin contact, is very rigid but at the same time has the desired features of a flat laminated spring. The wild grain of the wooden layers makes every prothesis a unique object and contributes to the individuality of the prothesis. Wood grows – as the human leg too – in a natural process. Nevertheless, the prothesis is not intended to imitate a human leg, but rather to be an independent object. The wooden leg is constructed of two pieces of laminated wood, each one of them made from seven to nine layers of veneer which is resinated under pressure. An aluminium adapter at the top end of the prothesis is used to connect the Wooden Leg to a conventional artificial knee. The Wooden Leg is supposed to be worn without cosmetic cover. As a further development a slip-proof sole as well as a wooden cosmetic construction for the use of the prothesis with clothes are imaginable.

Little Wings
printed electronics
Are we going to need more and more tools to help us in the future? Tools which in fact create new problems themselves rather than solving them? We will need phenomena to be amazed and fascinated by; interacting machines that surprise us and remind us of what we are doing. Let‘s imagine, through printed electronics it will be possible to create cutting patterns on our own ink-jet printers that would make up a swarm of little butterfly-like insects. These „little wings“ would „live“ inside rooms together with people. They would communicate with each other and stay together in a swarm. Being a mirror of their environment, noise would make them flap their wings faster while silence would make them move slowly and be calm.

aquaponics for the living room
Aquapon is a farming system for the living room. It is the combination of Aquaculture with Hydroponics to a complete natural circle. Aquaculture is the growth of fish in an artificial environment. Hydroponics uses a rough grained substrate similar to clay to grow plants only with water and light. Combined these techniques make up a very efficient and interesting farming system (aquaponics) for the growth of vegetables and fish or shrimps. In this circle the waste water is pumped to the roots of the plants where its naturally processed and cleaned. The nitrate of the fishes excrements serves as a fertilizer. The water then is pumped back into the aquarium. Small rests of grown plants as well as duckweed can be used to feed the fish.
